The roles of models and of visualization in science and science education have gained theoretical and practical saliency separately over the last decade or so. Two social trends seem to have underlain their emergence as focuses for research and development work. First, the much greater emphasis being placed on introducing students, at all levels of the education system, to the nature and processes of science. Being ‘able to think like a scientist�?has become much more important. Second, the ready availability of powerful computers with which models, especially dynamic models and simulations, can be displayed and manipulated in a virtual format.
