On the night of July 30, 1836, a mob of several hundred men rioted in the streets of Cincinnati, Ohio. What set them on this rampage was their anger toward the town's abolitionists, who had dedicated their lives to convincing all Americans that slavery was immoral and that all slaves should be freed. There was no slavery in Ohio, but just across the Ohio River, in Kentucky, the enslavement of Africans and their descendants was legal and common. That July night saw one of many pro-slavery riots that rocked Cincinnati and other cities in the 1830s and 1840s.
